Another Look: Briere’s Cheap Shot On Scott Hannan

Philadelphia’s Daniel Briere (of all people) delivered a nasty flying elbow on Colorado’s Scott Hannan while the Avalanche defenseman was admiring his goal.  Of all the dirty plays that have transpired around the NHL recently, this one may be the cheapest shot yet.  Unlike Georges Laraque’s knee, or James Neal’s blindside “boarding”, Briere’s elbow came after the play.

Hannan left the game and did not return.  Briere was not penalized on the play and totaled four points in the contest.  The Avalanche hung on to win the game 5-4, and Briere was named the game’s third star. Somebody ought to pound the living shit out of this weasel…

I think it seemed dirty but then again so many questionable hits happen every single game if we really want to get down to semantics then I guess we should review every single game from beginning to end and fine all people who violate such rules.

Briere is not a player that plays dirty. As a matter of fact I am a flyers fan and for a while there I thought he was worse than a pussy. He would fall as soon as somebody touched him. I think this fine is subject or the collective bargaining agreement should include stipulations concurrent with the individual in question. I believe for the most part if a player is not a dirty player then the hit is just part of the game.

This did seem somewhat high but as previously stated it was right after (immediately) following the shot from Hannan. This to me needs a different classification then the same (complaints about head shots). I realize that this would go for anybody but come review everybody then.

Hannan could be a puss, I don't know. I've usually assumed that guys with long hair had some fight in them, based on their wrestler-like look. He didn't see it coming, and most reports are saying he's not going to miss any time.

Still, it was a dirty hit and my issue remains that this was probably the first hit of Briere's career.

WTF? Is Hannan a sissy or something?

Briere is HALF his size and Hannan "left the game and did not return"? WHAT A WIMP!

This did NOT deserve a two-game suspension at all.

Considering all this hubbub over head shots is in an effort to protect little dicks like Briere, I like seeing him sit for his dirty hit. Whether or not Hannan is hurt isn't the issue, that was a bush league shot by Briere... a guy who would never lay into someone like that while the play was still going on.

Elbow didn't come up. Feet left the ice. Charging. Not a 2 game suspension. Come on Gary! Scott Hannan should be suspended for going to the ice on a hit from Danny Briere! In all seriousness, I don't believe Briere would have been suspended if the Mike Richards hit on Booth never happened. But if that's the case, you fine the team, not the player. Just bad league management.

Cant say its not a cheap shot but truthfully if he didnt use his elbow it would have been a clean hit, the puck had just left hannans stick as briere came to hit him. I'm a flyers fan but i do think Briere was wrong to hit him, but i would not go anywhere near calling him a weasel, you wrote that article like he had scored, half a minute passed he looked up at the replay and briere came and elbowed him. Maybe next time you should lay off hating on Philly, i know its easy but your just another hater in the crowd, btw we dont care what anyone thinks especially sports columnists.
