When members of a band despise each other as much as these guys do it’s to the benefit of everyone to be as far away from each other as possible.  Unfortunately, Lars Ulrich is positioned strategically in the middle preventing James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo from getting far enough away from him as they wish.
